Response #11: Dirty Water

“Clean Water Laws Are Neglected, at a Cost in Suffering”, by Charles Duhigg, exposes a deeply troubling problem that occurs throughout our country. Clean water is essential to all life, without it, health goes down, life span could go down, and the overall cleanliness of our country is compromised. Duhigg writes about people how have had problems because of polluted water, these people often do not get justice. The companies and people responsible for dangerous chemicals and parasites in the water, most times, do not get fined, punished, or pushed to change the way they get rid of their waste. This is a horrible thing, because if the people who are polluting our water are not punished, then it will continue to go on. I think that our government should make clean, safe water a priority. America is not a poor, defenseless country, so their should be no reason to not provide healthy water. It is true that regulations are overwhelming for companies, but there should be some effort on their part to ensure that their waste products are contained in a safe way. There is no proof that the chemicals in certain city’s water actually causes disease, but we all know that chemicals in our water has consequences. After reading this article, I hope that more people look into this ongoing problem and find adequate solutions.
